Obituary of Maria Cernuda
Maria Cernuda passed away peacefully at home on November 12, 2014. She was born Maria Isabel Garcia in 1921 in the town of Naguabo, Puerto Rico, the youngest of 12 children born to Nicholas and Margarita Garcia. She came to NYC as a young woman and married Delphin Cernuda during WWII. In the early 1950s they moved to Mt. Ivy in Pomona to build a home in the "country" and raise three sons. Mary worked for the East Ramapo Schools in the lunchroom for many years.
She was predeceased by her husband Delphin in 2007 and her son Henry in 1975. She is survived by two sons, Raul Miller and his daughter Dawn Daugherty and her husband Bobby, and Delphin Cernuda, his wife Barbara and their children, Martin, Adam, Joanna, Gina and her husband David Julien and one great-grandson, Christian Julien. She also leaves her devoted, loving, longtime caregiver and companion Diane, who became like a daughter to her.
Maria's family will receive friends at T.J. McGOWAN SONS FUNERAL HOME, GARNERVILLE, on Friday, November 14, 2014 from 5-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Maria on Saturday, November 15 at 9:45am at St. Paul's Church, Lake Rd., Congers, with burial to follow at Onderdonk Veteran's Cemetery, Suffern. Memorial donations may be made to United Hospice of Rockland or Alzheimer's Research.
