Obituary of Edward P. Zugibe

Edward P. Zugibe, Sr. passed into eternal rest on Sunday, March 29, 2015. Edward was born in Garnerville, on March, 28th 1923 to Benjamin and Anna (Zurak) Zugibe. Edward was schooled in the Haverstraw schools. He worked in Capital Dye Factory in Garnerville. He served as a Corporal in the United States Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater Division. He was a proud member of Leo Ladders Post Number 130. Upon his return, he met and married the love of his life and best friend Mary Zorn. They married on June 19th 1948. Ed had ventured into several businesses with his brother Paul before opening up Zugibe and Son Hardware alongside his wife Mary, and then his son Edward Jr. Edward became involved in local politics shortly after opening his hardware store. He served as a Trustee for the Village of West Haverstraw from 1959-1972. He then served as Mayor for 35 years. During his tenure, the Village constructed two new fire houses, and a new Village Hall/ Community Center. On July 9th 2013, current Mayor John Ramundo and the Village board honored Ed by renaming the Village Hall and Community Center, The Edward P. Zugibe Sr. West Haverstraw Village Hall and Community Center. Edward is survived by his loving wife of 66 years Mary, by his daughters Victoria Zugibe, Valerie (Charles) Manzione, and by his son Edward (Eileen) Zugibe Jr. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Erica (Scott) Wallace, Aaron Miller, Nicholas (Rachel) Manzione, James Manzione, Paul Manzione, Michael Manzione, Ashleigh Zugibe, and Candice Zugibe; and by his great-granddaughter Emma Manzione. Edward was predeceased by his sister Victoria Jansen, and by his brothers: Benjamin, Victor (Paul), John, and Fredrick. Edward's family will receive friends at T.J McGowan Sons Funeral Home, 71 N. Central Highway, Garnerville, on Tuesday, March 31 from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated for Edward on Wednesday, April 1 at St. Peter's Church in Haverstraw at 11:15am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Edward's memory to United Hospice of Rockland or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
