Obituary of Edith A. Matone

Edith A. Matone, age 95, died peacefully on December 27, 2016 at her home in the Mountainview Gardens section of Cedar Crest in Pompton Plains, NJ. Mrs. Matone had been a resident of Cedar Crest since moving there with her husband Augustine J. Matone from Haverstraw, NY in 2004. Mrs. Matone was born Edith Gervasoni in Marstella, PA in 1921. When she was still very young, the family moved to Guttenberg, NJ, where she attended local schools and graduated from Memorial High School in West New York. She was the third of four daughters born to Peter Gervasoni and his wife Helen (Zurlo). After Mr. and Mrs. Matone married in 1948, she became a resident of the Village of Haverstraw, NY for the next 56 years. While raising three children, Mrs. Matone was employed full time by the North Rockland School District in administrative capacities for over 30 years. She was well-known and loved by several generations of students in the Haverstraw-Stony Point High School and later in the North Rockland High School in Thiells. As secretary to Assistant Principal Frank Schnell, the resident disciplinarian, Mrs. Matone was particularly well-known to those students who were determined to be in need of Mr. Schnell's discipline. Mrs. Matone is survived by her daughter Lisa (William) Torpey of Glen Rock, NJ, her daughter Diane (Eric) Messner of Pearl River, NY, and her son Peter (Patricia) of Harleysville, PA. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren: Sarah Torpey (Johann Hibschman) of New York City, Matthew Messner of Boulder, CO, Christopher (Susannah) Torpey of New York City, Karen (Jeffrey ) Kirchner of Newtown, PA, Michael Torpey (Alpana Choudhury) of Brooklyn, NY, Meredith (Ray) Cross of Flourtown, PA, and Adam Matone of Harleysville, PA. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren: Will, Thomas and Edmund Hibschman; Kieran, Cavan and Finnian Torpey; Abigail Kirchner and Eesha Torpey. She is also survived by her sister Erma Carlucci of West Orange, NJ. She was predeceased in 2011 by her beloved husband Mr. Matone, a former Postmaster in Haverstraw, and by her sisters Laura Montagino and Anne Olivieri. The family will receive friends and relatives at T.J. McGOWAN SONS FUNERAL HOME, 133 Broadway, Haverstraw, on Thursday, December 29, 2016 from 4-8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Edith on Friday, December 30, 2016 at 10 AM at St. Peter's Church, Haverstraw, with interment to follow at Mt. Repose Cemetery, Haverstraw. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may donate in Edith's memory toward research for the cause, prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's Disease.
