Obituary of Frederick J. Hewitt Jr.

Frederick J. “Fred” Hewitt Jr., of White Bluff, TN, formerly of Haverstraw, N.Y. entered eternal life Sunday, March 15, 2020 surrounded by his loving family.

Fred was born on July 29, 1951 to Frederick J. and Dorothy (Babcock) Hewitt in Suffern, NY.  He married his wife of 48 years, Margaret “Peggy” Sheehan on April 15, 1972 in Monsey, NY. 

Fred worked as a Maintenance Supervisor at HVDDSO, retiring after 35 years of service.  He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.  Outside of his work and civic service, he spent many years making memories and building lifelong friendships through his love of music.  He will always be fondly remembered as Papa Comet to “his” girls from his 10 years of coaching fast-pitch softball.  His retirement years were spent traveling far and wide, enjoying countless hours with his children and going on great adventures with the icing on the cake, his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his father, “Junie”; his grandparents, Fred and Louise Hewitt, and William and Elizabeth Babcock; his mother and father-in-law, Peggy and Jim Sheehan; 3 brothers-in-law, Bill Peterson, Artie Starke, and Jim Sheehan; and a sister-in-law, Patrice Sheehan; and several aunts and uncles. 

He is survived by his wife, Peggy; his three daughters, Margaret Hewitt-Barrett of White Bluff, TN, Dori Hewitt of Syracuse, NY, and Kristine (Jesse) Arvidson of Blauvelt, NY; his son, Frederick III (Paige) Hewitt of White Bluff, TN; six grandchildren, Bryanne Barrett, Haley, Hannah and Owen Arvidson, and Frederick IV and Sloane Hewitt.  Fred is also survived by his mother, Dottie Hewitt of Garnerville, NY; two brothers, Rick (Dar) of West Haverstraw, NY and Robert of Poughkeepsie, NY; two sisters, Jeanne Peterson and Terri Starke both of Garnerville, NY; four sisters-in-law, Kathy (Tom) Hunneman of Largo, FL, Patti (Mark) Kugler of Garnerville, NY, Terry (Dick) Chase of Grant, FL, Beth Sheehan of Garnerville, NY, three brothers-in-law, Bill Sheehan of Stony Point, NY, Ed (Kim) Sheehan of Pearl River, NY, and Tom (Kathy) Sheehan of Newburgh, NY an uncle, aunt and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. 

Visitation with the family is scheduled for Thursday, March 19, 2020 from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM at the T.J. McGowan Sons Funeral home 71 N. Central Hwy, Garnerville, NY 10923 (845) 429-6665.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, March 20, 2020 at 10:00 AM at St. Peter's/St. Mary's Church, 115 Broadway, Haverstraw, NY 10927.    

A graveside service and burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 23, 2020 at the Dickson County Memorial Gardens, Highway 70 East, Burns, TN. 

For those desiring, memorials may be made to the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center.
