Obituary of Gaetano Pavone

Gaetano Pavone, 97, of Stony Point passed away on November 30, 2019. He was born on June 19, 1922 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn to Giacomo & Lucia (Crocella) Pavone. He attended City College in NY before enlisting for service in WWII. In 1943, while stationed in Biloxi Mississippi, Gaetano married Mae – the love of his life.  They were happily married for 51 years.

Gaetano proudly served his country in the US Army Air Corps during WWII as a Technical Sergeant in the 15^th Airforce 459^th bomb group. He completed 51 combat missions in Europe as a Flight Engineer on B24 Bombers. In 1957, President Eisenhower appointed him Postmaster of Bear Mountain, NY where he served over 27 years.

Gaetano was a competitive swimmer in high school and college. As a senior athlete, US Masters Swimming twice designated him an “All American” for excellence in swimming for recording the fastest time in one event. He also enjoyed hiking and gardening.

Besides his parents, Gaetano is predeceased by his loving wife Mae (Dec. 1994), his brothers Jack Costanzo and Alexander Pavone, and sister Jean Ciraolo. He is survived by his loving children James Pavone of Austin, TX, Barbara Pavone of Garnerville and Eugene Pavone of Stony Point. He cherished 6 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends & relatives on Wednesday Dec 4^thand Thursday Dec 5^th from 4 – 8PM at the TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home at 71 N. Central Highway, Garnerville, NY 10923. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Gaetano on Friday Dec. 6^th at 10 AM in Immaculate Conception Church in Stony Point with interment to follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery in Haverstraw.
