Obituary of Dorothy Veronica Nebel

Dorothy Veronica Nebel, 85, of New City, NY passed away September 12th. She was born on January 8, 1932 in New York City, NY to loving parents James and Julia (McCarthy) McFarland. Throughout her childhood Dorothy grew up playing and accelerating in sports like baseball, handball, bowling and basketball. Growing up in the lower east side, Dorothy was part of the great depression and World War II. While attending Washington Irving HS, she met Tom Nebel and a wonderful friendship developed which would eventually turn into a beautiful marriage. She married Tom in 1950, settled in the Bronx where she began her family and eventually moved everyone to New City, NY. Dorothy was an avid reader and loyal friend. She kept in shape as a senior by joining NYSC Silver Sneakers; one could even find her snowplowing in winter months and lawn mowing in the summer. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her grandson. Her late husband, Thomas, and her sister, Virginia Judge, predecease Dorothy. She is survived by her brother, James McFarland (Helen) (NYC), her sons Thomas (Indiana) and James (Janette) (Garnerville), her cherished grandson, Matthew, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will be receiving friends on Thursday, September 21, 2017 between the hours of 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at T.J. McGowan's Funeral Home, 71 N. Central Highway, Garnerville, NY 10923. A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday September 22, 2017 at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, 115 Broadway, Haverstraw, NY 10927. Immediately following, a private cremation will be held. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
