Obituary of Robert J. Dowd

Robert J. “Bob” Dowd

Robert Joseph “Bob” Dowd, age 84, of Stony Point, New York, passed away on January 15, 2024.  Born on April 13, 1939, in Inwood, New York City, Bob lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his faith, and his community.

Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife Peggy, with whom he shared 61 years of marriage.  He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his children:  Kathleen, Deborah (Doug), Robert (PattiAnn) and Suzanne. He was a cherished grandfather to Michael (Jenn) McGuire, Kelly (Kevin) Quinn, Thomas Dowd, Erin Brett, Shannon Dowd, Dennis Bellino and Andrew Speziale and a proud great grandfather to Emily Quinn, Caitlin Quinn, and Kevin Quinn.

Bob’s early years were spent in pursuit of religious life at the Barrytown Seminary where he pursued a vocation as a Christian Brother.  This experience forged lifelong friendships that led to the founding in 2007 of the Barrytown breakfast club that meets monthly.

A veteran of the United States Army, Bob served as Staff Sergeant and as a medic in the National Guard.  His commitment to service continued in his role as a detective with the NYPD from which he retired in 1981 .  Bob’s leadership in security was further exemplified through his positions as Vice President of Security for both Seiko/Pulsar and for Emigrant Savings Bank.  He was a former co-owner of the Hi-Tor Shooting Center.

An active member of the community, Bob was known for his love of Irish music, hosting Irish Seisun’s for 28 years, beginning in his home and later to several area pubs, delighting in the joy of traditional Irish music and camaraderie.  His passion for music was only matched by his love of travel and the many adventures he shared with family and friends across the globe.

Bob was a past president of the Hudson Valley 10-13 Association, was a member of the Elks and former member of the Emerald Society marching band. An additional favorite pastime, he enjoyed his trips to the Borgata in Atlantic City.

The family extends their gratitude to all who provided care and support to Bob throughout the years and in his final days, including Bernadette Burkert, Natalia, Alison, Alvaro, Nicole and Katheryn, United Hospice, the Stony Point Police Department and the MSKCC physicians and staff.

Visitation for Robert J. Dowd will be held at T. J. McGowan and Sons Funeral Home in Garnerville, NY on Friday, January 26, 2024, from 4pm to 8pm.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 10am at St. Peter’s Church in Haverstraw, NY.  The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Bob’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.  Bob’s integrity, humor, and kindness will be profoundly missed by all who know him.
