Obituary of Immaculata Carpenter
Immaculata “Mac” Carpenter passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at the age of 88.
A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, Mac was a kind, compassionate person who touched the lives of everyone she met. She loved being around her family and friends and her greatest joy was her five grandchildren.
She was born on December 19, 1934, in Far Rockaway, NY, a daughter of the late Saverio “Sam” and Carmela Porcella. Upon graduation from high school, she took her vows as a nun with the Sisters of St. Joseph in Brentwood, NY and served for 17 years. While in the convent, she earned her B.A. in Education from St. Francis College in Brooklyn, NY and began teaching elementary schools within the Archdiocese of New York. After returning to lay life, she continued her education and earned a M.S. in Education from Long Island University, CW Post.
Mac met her husband, John “Jack” Carpenter at a wedding and the couple were married on May 27, 1972. They moved to Rockland County and resided in Haverstraw, where Mac lived for more than 45 years.
In 1985, she joined the faculty of Immaculate Conception School in Stony Point where she taught preschool until her retirement in 2002. Known to many as Miss Mac, she was known for her patience, kindness, and nurturing spirit, and she touched the lives of many children.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jack and her nine siblings. Mac is survived by her children, Kris and his wife Dana Carpenter, and Elizabeth McMullen and her husband, Jonathan; five grandchildren, Alex and Michaela Carpenter and Owen, Kendall, and Nora McMullen.
Mac's faith and love for God were evident in everything she did. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, colleagues, and students, who will always remember her as a beacon of light in their lives.
Rest in peace, Immaculata Carpenter. You will be forever missed and always loved.
