Obituary of Lillian Monahan
Lillian Monahan, 99 of Garnerville NY passed away peacefully with family at her side on November 4, 2022. She was born on June 13, 1923 in Brooklyn, NY to Anna and Andrew Gerlach and spent her childhood and early adult life in Brooklyn, where she met and married her childhood sweetheart, John Robert (Bob) Monahan. She and her family moved to Garnerville NY in 1972.
Lillian and Bob were blessed with five children, John Monahan (Geraldine), Kenneth Monahan (Anne), Stephen Monahan(predeceased) (Ellie), Kathleen Hyams and Richard Monahan (Maria),as well as numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Lillian was born hearing impaired and was diagnosed later in life with Macular Degeneration, but she never let the obstacles and challenges of her life prevent her from contributing to the greater good of the community. She was a client, volunteer, and eventually a member of the Board of Directors for the Rockland County Association for the Visually Impaired. Her love of animals brought her to invest her time at Hi-Tor Animal Care Center (where she was known as the Cat Lady) and you could find her weekly at the Community Food Bank of her local parish.
A lover of good food and a great cook, Lillian prided herself on being able to stretch the family budget without sacrificing flavor much to the delight of her husband, her children, and the many relatives and friends that shared her table. She loved to find a bargain whether at the supermarket, or a local shop and you could hear her exclaim “Guess what I paid for this?”
Lillian was a kind and generous friend and loved by all who met her. She will be greatly missed and always fondly remembered.
Visitation for Lillian will be held Tuesday, November 8, 2022 from 4 PM – 8 PM at T. J. McGowan & Sons Funeral Home, 71 N. Central Hwy, Garnerville, NY. Mass will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2022, 11am, at St. Gregory Barbarigo, 21 Cinder Road, Garnerville, NY and interment to follow at Mt. Repose Cemetery in Haverstraw, NY.
