Obituary of Dorothy M. Cooney

Dorothy M. Cooney passed away peacefully on January 15, 2022 with her family gathered around her at the Joe Raso Hospice Residence. She was 74 years old. Dorothy (Dotty) was born in the Jackson Heights section of Queens, NY on January 26, 1947 to James and Catherine Sullivan. The family later moved to the Inwood Section of Manhattan in 1959.

Dotty married the love of her life Tom Cooney on May 10, 1969 at Good Shepard Church in Inwood. They moved to Thiells, NY in 1972 where they raised their three children Laura, Brian and Kevin.

Dotty earned her nursing degree at Rockland Community College and her Master of Science degree at the New School for Social Research. She worked diligently and lovingly as a school nurse in the North Rockland School District for most of her nursing career, with the majority of that time as school nurse at St. Gregory Barbarigo School in Garnerville, NY. Dotty also served many years as volunteer coordinator for the parish Mercy Ministry food program after serving several years as a participant in the program.

Dotty loved to cook, was an avid hobby photographer and enjoyed entertaining her friends and family at home on many special occasions. While Dotty treasured her time with her family, her greatest joy came later in life, spending time with her five grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by family, close friends, all who knew her as school nurse at St. Gregory Barbarigo and also the many people who called upon her for medical advice when they were in need of help.

Dotty is survived by her husband Tom Cooney, her daughter Laura and her husband Jason Bosworth, her son Brian and his wife Toni Cooney, and her son Kevin and his wife Amy Cooney. She is also survived by her five cherished grandchildren Kate Bosworth, Darren, Allison, Leah and Alex Cooney and loving brother and his wife, Donald and Theresa Sullivan. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am on Saturday, January 22 at St. Gregory Barbarigo Church, Garnerville, NY followed by interment at St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Nanuet, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. In the interest of public health and safety, a repass will be scheduled at a later date.
