Obituary of John "Jack" Joseph Ryan

John Joseph Ryan of Stony Point passed away peacefully on November 10, 2021 after a brief illness at the age of 83. Born in the Bronx, NY, John was the son of John Ryan and Mary Ryan (Sweeney). John is survived by his wife Patricia (Saunders) of Stony Point, his sons John (Jodi) of Montvale, NJ, and Edward (Susan) of Cocoa, Florida and his wife's son Brian Martin. He is additionally survived by his brother Robert (Brighid) as well as nephew Mark and niece Delia along with his sister-in-law Joyce, nephew Daniel and niece Kathy.  His beloved grandchildren, Jennifer, Matthew and Anna also survive him. John was predeceased by his parents as well as his first wife of 41 years Anne Marie Ryan (Connors).  He was also predeceased by his brother in law Joseph and nephew Joseph.

After graduation from high school in the Bronx, John joined the US Army in 1956 and served proudly for three years in the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper. After his honorable discharge in 1959, John completed schooling under the GI Bill and became an electrical engineer. John had a lengthy career with the NYC Transit Authority of over 20 years and also worked for several national engineering firms.  His expertise was in the rail transit business, where he worked on multiple electrical engineering projects with respect to the NYC Subway System, Metro North and NJ Transit.

John married his first wife Anne in 1961 and after the birth of his sons moved to Stony Point in 1967. John was active as a coach and manager in the Stony Point Little League and as a leader in the Stony Point Cub Scouts. John was a member of the Haverstraw Elks Lodge and a founding member of the North Rockland Social Club. In addition, he was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church for 54 years and fondly recalled services in Latin at the former St. Joseph Church in Grassy Point.

After the passing of his first wife Anne in 2002 after a lengthy illness he married Patricia Martin in 2005 and remained in Stony Point with her until his recent passing.  He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and staying in touch with his many friends and neighbors in Stony Point as well as former service members of the US Army. He was especially proud when his son Edward joined the 82nd Airborne and followed him as a paratrooper after graduating from high school.

Family will receive friends at the TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home at 71 North Central Highway in Garnerville, NY on Tuesday, November 16 from 2-4pm and 6-8pm.   A mass of Christian burial will be held on Wednesday morning at the Immaculate Conception Church located at 26 John Street in Stony Point. Internment at Ascension Cemetery located at 650 Saddle River Road in Airmont, NY will immediately follow the funeral service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation which supports American veterans, first responders and their families or another veterans related charity of their choice.
