Margaret Dowd

Obituary of Margaret Ann Dowd

Margaret (Peggy) Ann Dowd, 82, of Stony Point NY, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2020 surrounded by family, after decades long courageous battle with Parkinson’s which she endured with dignity and grace.

Peggy married the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Dowd on August 8, 1959 and were married almost 61 years. Her children were here pride and joy and raised them to be strong, accomplished, and caring adults. Loving mother to Kathleen Dowd, Deborah Dowd (Douglas Brett), Robert Dowd (PattiAnn) and Suzanne Dowd (Bob Speziale). Amazing Grandmother to Michael McGuire (Jenn), Kelly Quinn (Kevin), Thomas Dowd, Erin Brett, Shannon Dowd, Dennis Bellino and Andrew Speziale. Awesome Great Grandmother to Emily Quinn, Caitlin Quinn and Kevin Quinn. Loving Aunt to her many nieces and nephews. She was lifelong friends with Eileen Walsh, Mary Finneran, Maryann Swords, Joan Taran and Jean Ferguson.

Peggy was born February 23, 1938 to Ann (Mulvaney) and Thomas McCorry and into a large, wonderful extended Irish family. Along with her loving brothers Thomas McCorry and James (Eileen) McCorry they were raised in Pelham Bay the Bronx. Peggy graduated from Our Lady of the Assumption, and Villa Maria Academy. She was a proud alumnus of St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing (class of ’58)  and Dominican College (class of ’94) where she obtained her BSN in Nursing. She dedicated her life as a Registered Nurse who would help anyone in need, and was a calming force when illness struck. Peggy worked in many Hospitals including St. Vincent’s, Jacobi, Nyack, and Good Samaritan Hospital.

For many years, Peggy enjoyed singing in the St, Gregory’s choir. At family parties she liked to dance the “Stack-O’-Barley” with her cousins and friends. Proudly wearing her nurses cap, she often marched in the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade with St. Vincent’s alumni. She enjoyed travelling with her husband, family, and friends. Peggy especially loved being near the ocean where she would sit and watch the waves roll in. A lifelong New York Yankee fan she would often reminisce of going to the stadium to see a game with her father.

Peggy truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures. She always had a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. Peggy was a strong woman who was a gentle and caring role model. She always found joy spending time with her family, reading, playing cards with her friends and crocheting. As a nurse and a mother, she was always helping others and was often sought out for her medical knowledge and direction, even up to the last months of her life.  “Once a nurse, always a nurse.” Peggy had a generous, kind spirit and an uncanny ability to reach people in a deep and positive way.
