Obituary of Mary Theresa Henderson

The angels rejoice: Mary Theresa Rooney Henderson transitioned suddenly to the Sweet Hereafter on Saturday, Oct. 29,2017 leaving the comfort of her Goshen, New York, home and hearth to join our beloved ancestors. Mary lived brazenly independent to the last. Born Nov. 19, 1935 in New York City to Peter and Mary (nee Wynn) Rooney, Irish immigrant parents that she honored by living an exceptional life. Mary attended St. Alphonsus Commercial High School in New York, NY and soon became a typist and young mother working from home in the early-1950's. She also pursued independent studies through the years at Rockland Community College. Mary was a real beauty, a lefty, a yarn artisan, creative homemaker, and an all-around swell gal to love. Mary was so sociable and made new friends and acquaintances wherever she went. She loved a good party, laughter most of all, along with her cherished brood. Mary worked in sales for 11 years at Macy's in Nanuet and dedicated 15 years as an Intake Litigation Assistant at the Rockland County Public Defender's Office, a proud career from which she retired in 2009. During her "golden years," Mary was a boastful mother and grandmother, sharing news with anyone who would listen about her nine beautiful grandchildren who gave her life deep meaning and joy. Mary is predeceased by her beloved son, Robert Peter Henderson, and husband, Robert John Henderson, adored sister Catherine Koch and niece Jamie Nagle. Mary is survived by her loving children: Jeanette (Tom) McDowell, Rosemary King, Kathleen (Lewis) Schassler, and Peter (Jennifer) Henderson. Her adored grandchildren include: Travis and Devin King, Kelly and Neal Schassler, Evan, Darcy and Sarah McDowell, and William and Kelsie Henderson. Mary was thrilled recently to kiss the cheek of newly born Finn King, her first great-grandchild, just weeks shy of her sudden departure. Mary leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, here in America, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond. In her twilight years, in Goshen, Mary continued to explore and marvel at the natural beauty of Orange County, to take her chances at Monticello Raceway and kept the church candles blazing for her brood at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel where she often went for peaceful meditation. Mary would typically jump into her car several times a week and courageously head off, into the unknown for new adventures, always trusting that her GPS would take her back safely again. Mom's journey is complete now; she is safe in the heart of love. Sláinte The family will receive friends & relatives on Thursday Nov. 2nd From 4 - 8 PM at TJ McGowan Sons Funeral Home 71 N.
